Another Option for Vacuum Sealing Mylar Bags....

Mylar Bags....Sealing with a Vacuum Sealer...

I have used Mylar Bags for years and just love them.  I have written 2 posts dealing with using them. You can find these posts here and here.

However, I came across this video with a really unique idea.  The difference between this gentleman's device and mine is that you gasket area is much wider. I plan to experiment to see if my Food Saver device can work as well.  No matter, this is worth your time to view.

Vacuum sealers are one of the most convenient tools to have in your home. A vacuum sealer can help you keep food fresh, increase the effects of marinating (sealing in flavor), keep gourmet coffee beans fresh. Vacuum sealers and high quality bags will also keep food safe from toxins carried through the air, and keeps them dry so they oxidize, kept fresh and ready to enjoy.

The important thing to keep in mind is that your sealer is only as good as the quality of the replacement freezer bags you use and there are several to choose from. You'll typically want to buy storage bags made by the same manufacturer as your vacuum sealer if possible (read the manual that comes with your sealer). While some are fairly universal, not all of them are all that convenient so you'll want to make sure you get the right bags in order to get the most out of the sealing process.

If you are not sure what kind of freezer bags you are going to need look for the ones advertised as being "universal" and purchase according to the actual "vacuum sealing" properties; not those simply marked for the freezer or storage; these don't have optimal sealing properties. There are many bags that work in the freezer but are not safe for the microwave or any sort of higher temperatures. It's always nice to have a vacuum sealer bag that you can put in hot water or microwave for quick meals. Make sure that your vacuum sealed bags can serve all the purposes you have in mind.

When it comes to buying replacement food storage bags you'll find a number of places to search online that offer a huge amount of choices, and at discount prices, often a lot less expensive than they are in physical retail stores. In addition you can typically buy bags straight from manufacturers. As you search for high quality vacuum seal bags you'll find that there are several brands available but not all are worthy options.

Look for brands such as Deni, FoodSaver and Weston bags which are all well-known options and they all come with their own unique qualities. While one might be better when it comes to microwave use, another might not come in the same sizes and might be more costly. Each brand has its own characteristics and it's important to understand what ones are will work with your vacuum sealer, and which features are most important to you.

Food storage freezer bags are extremely convenient and definitely a handy addition to any kitchen. Not only can you shop wholesale because you'll be able to vacuum seal and freeze the food you purchase, you can prepare portions to be used for quick meals or snacks you can microwave and enjoy in minutes; great reasons to have a vacuum sealer around. Just make sure that when it comes time to order new vacuum sealer bags that you get the right ones for your vacuum sealer, and that you get a fair price.
